Making a 3D action game

So I found this video here about a fan game, or tech demo, and thought it looked pretty cool, but I was puzzled by the reasons why it was made.

Thing is, this was made to see if Sonic can work in 3D, however, that's not really what the problem is, as what most people have made it, it's a subject of level design. His level design is ok but it does feel as aimless as some people have said, and it's a problem I had with many 3D fan games. Another one, especially prominent in a fan game called Sonic Robo Blast 2, is the need to try and make Sonic cater to the platforming genre when he shouldn't be. I think this is a problem with many people thinking that they need to keep copying Sonic 1 in order to make a good sonic game, because even 2 and 3 tried to move away from the more platforming aspect of the 1st game. I also remember a video from some time ago about these two guys talking about games, and when Sonic Adventure came up, they had a bad opinion of the 3D games concerning gameplay, however it wasn't as most people make it out to be. One of the guys simply said he had a hard time controlling and having to adjust himself all the time, which is understandable to a certain degree, but if the stage design allowed for more freedom in movement, you wouldn't have to worry about controls being precise. Platforming games need to do that because of how precise platforming his, however, it's hard to do that while going fast, which is why special attention needs to be payed to level design so it doesn't become an issue.

If you really want to fix the issue, you have to think of Sonic as a speedy action game rather then a platfmormer. Not saying this is a problem in the video there but I saw some of the platforming and how the guy had to stop or slow down to jump them. A page should be taken from a game I brought up a few times before, Hover: Revolt of gamers. It's designed much like what Sonic should be going for, you have speed and much room to move around it, which was something the tech demo gets right most of the time. Thing is, while Hover does had platforming, you're perfectly capable of traveling without slowing down, unless you were trying to climb up a specific area. Sonic games after the original tried to move away from that platforming aspect and made the level design more for action, giving you much room to run but less platformers and more obstacles and enemies. They were devoid of platforming but most of the time you were just just gaps, not floating squares, and even they could be fixed if they were bigger then half the size of the character.

Here's a video of Hover again. www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYKKdB…

I seriously think anyone trying to make a 3D Sonic game should take note of Hover, even if you can't play it(you should if you could run those 3D games, and many people used the Generations mods on PC), at least look up videos on the games. Even then, one thing to look at in the trailer is how much you're able to just run and jump. For a Sonic game, you really just have to take it from there and add enemies and obstacles and you're good. I thought the video game was pretty good though, I don't know if the guy intends on making a fan game, but maybe it could be one of the few that gets finished. It would be a lot easier if a lot of these guys just formed teams though, many of them often make the same shit really and go no where. I can only think of one full 3D game that got finished, but that's for another meme, and it's racked with the platforming problem unfortunately.

I'd like to quote something from Zero Punctuation. He mentions this in his review of Silent Hill: Downpour, where he briefly touches on Sonic and what is wrong with Sonic lately. This explains it perfectly.

"Over the last few years, I have gained a new appreciation for what Sonic the Hedgehog fans went through from about 1996 onwards, watching one's favorite franchise flail about desperately trying to recapture the spirit of the good ones without understanding the essential factors, like a man trying to build a sand castle out of rice pudding. Although the difference is that anyone who hasn't deployed a firework up their nasal cavity can tell you why modern Sonic doesn't work. It's the 3D gameplay, because controlling Sonic turns into trying to molest a greasy pig on a pinball machine!"

There you have it.
